Why Is Beauty Expanding Beyond Traditional Categories?

For decades, the beauty industry has developed around core product categories such as skincare, makeup, hair care, and fragrance.

Recently, however, traditional category distinctions alone have become insufficient to describe the beauty market.

Approaches once associated with facial skincare are now being applied to body and scalp care, while adjacent areas such as wellness, oral care, intimate care, and at-home beauty devices are becoming increasingly connected to consumers’ beauty and self-care experiences.

This does not mean that traditional beauty categories are disappearing. Rather, as consumers’ definition of beauty broadens, the boundaries of the industry are expanding with it.

So, in which directions is the beauty industry expanding, and what does this shift mean for brands developing new products?

Which Areas Is Beauty Expanding Into?

The current shift is less about the emergence of a single new category and more about the boundaries between traditional beauty and adjacent sectors becoming increasingly blurred.

One of the most visible changes is the expansion of skincare practices from the face to the body and scalp.

In body care, products are moving beyond basic moisturization to address more specific skin concerns and desired benefits. Hair care is also expanding beyond the hair itself to address specific scalp concerns such as dryness, excess oil, and flaking.

The intersection of beauty and wellness is also growing. Nutrition, supplements, and sleep management are not themselves cosmetics, but they are increasingly considered alongside beauty as part of consumers’ self-care routines.

The same is true of at-home beauty devices. As LED masks and various home-care devices become integrated into skincare routines, the scope of at-home beauty care is expanding beyond cosmetic products.

Areas such as oral care and intimate care, once viewed as separate from beauty, are also developing closer connections with the beauty market through the lens of beauty and self-care.

K-Beauty Brands Are Also Expanding Their Product Portfolios

This shift can also be seen in the product expansion strategies of Korean beauty brands.

COSRX, which has grown primarily as a skincare brand, launched its first-ever hair care line, PEPTIDE-132 ULTRA PERFECT HAIR BONDING, in 2025. Drawing on its science-based skincare approach and expertise in combining ingredients, the brand expanded into hair and scalp care.

Derma skincare brand Dr.G also offers scalp and hair care products through its ‘DOOPI LAB’ line, including shampoos, treatments, and scalp tonics.

Rather than entering entirely unrelated categories, both brands are extending their knowledge of skin and ingredients into the adjacent areas of hair and scalp care. These examples show how K-Beauty brands are applying strengths developed in existing categories to new areas of care.

Why Is the Scope of Beauty Expanding?

Behind this shift is a change in the way consumers perceive beauty.

Beauty is increasingly viewed not only as a way to care for one’s appearance but also as part of self-care and everyday well-being.

McKinsey’s global consumer research found that consumers do not define beauty solely in terms of physical attractiveness or looking younger. They also connect beauty with broader concepts such as confidence, self-care, and physical and mental well-being.

NIQ has similarly noted that understanding the current beauty market requires looking beyond traditional cosmetic products to include wellness and self-care.

As consumers increasingly see care for their skin, hair, scalp, and body as part of a broader self-care experience, the range of products brands can develop is expanding as well.

Product Opportunities Can Be Found Beyond Existing Categories

This shift can also influence how brands plan new products.

Traditionally, a skincare brand might expand its product line within the same category by developing a new serum or cream, while a hair care brand might introduce a new shampoo or treatment.

As beauty care becomes more specialized, however, brands can also find product opportunities beyond their existing categories.

As the examples above demonstrate, brands can apply expertise built in skincare to adjacent areas such as body, scalp, and hair care, addressing related consumer needs.

The important point is not to enter a new category simply because it is attracting attention.

Brands should first consider whether their existing expertise and product concept can extend naturally into the new area and which consumer needs the product would address.

Products in New Areas May Require Different Development Considerations

When expanding into a new category, brands also need to review additional factors during product development.

The appropriate formula, texture, sensory feel, and packaging format may vary depending on the product’s intended purpose and where it will be used on the body.

Not all products in these adjacent areas are classified as cosmetics.

Oral care and intimate care products, supplements, and beauty devices may be classified or regulated differently from cosmetics, depending on their characteristics and the country in which they are sold.

When planning a product in a new area, brands should therefore consider the following factors alongside the product concept:

  • Which consumer concern or need is the product intended to address?
  • What role will it play in the consumer’s existing care routine?
  • Which formulation and packaging format are appropriate for its intended purpose and area of application?
  • How will the product be classified in the target market?
  • Which regulatory and labeling requirements must be reviewed in that market?

Expanding into a new category is not simply a matter of adding another product type. It requires brands to consider the product’s purpose alongside the requirements for its development.

Finding New Product Opportunities in an Expanding Beauty Market

Traditional categories such as skincare, makeup, hair care, and fragrance remain at the center of the beauty industry.

However, the boundaries around these categories are expanding.

Existing beauty categories are becoming more specialized, with growing attention to body and scalp care, while adjacent areas such as wellness, at-home beauty devices, oral care, and intimate care are increasingly connected to consumers’ beauty and self-care experiences.

Brands planning new products can therefore identify development opportunities by asking not only, “What type of product should we develop next?” but also, “Which new areas are becoming part of consumers’ self-care routines?”
